Meet Michele and Omar Marroquin: The Dynamic Husband-and-Wife Team Behind A & I Design

If you’re looking for an eclectic mix of art, heart, and a dash of adventure, look no further than Michele and Omar Marroquin, the creative duo behind A & I Design. This husband-and-wife team, aged 38 and 42, has been crafting unique, laser-engraved wooden pieces since 2018, but they’ve been operating under their official banner since 2020. From humble beginnings to creating memorable, one-of-a-kind designs, their journey is a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and stepping into the unknown.

Art Inspired by Life’s Little Moments

So, what sparks their creativity? Well, Michele and Omar aren’t sure. Sometimes it’s a spontaneous thought that flows during a long drive, other times it’s a sudden burst of expression under stress. And then there are the moments of pure joy when they get to dive deep into the medium of the day, syncing their ideas to make them come to life. For these two, it’s all about the process, and they relish every step of it.

From T-Rex to High-Art: The Accidental Discovery of Woodworking

Michele and Omar’s artistic evolution is a delightful mix of happy accidents and organic growth. In the beginning, they were laser-engraving glassware and tumblers. But it wasn’t until they made a wooden T-Rex as a fun novelty for one of their vendor events that they discovered their true calling. “People were so enamored with it that we pushed ourselves to create more elaborate wooden designs,” Omar explains. And thus, their love affair with woodworking began.

Their work is now known for its eclectic style, always evolving and pushing the limits of what they can do with their laser technology. From intricate designs to larger-than-life pieces, there’s no limit to the beauty they create.

Creating Art That Tells a Story

When it comes to their work, Michele and Omar hope to create more than just beautiful objects—they want to create memories. Whether it’s a Christmas Cardinal that reminds someone of a loved one who’s no longer here, or a personalized Puerto Rican tea light that brings a moment of peace, their art is meant to spark personal connections and stir emotions.

Overcoming the "Terrifying Step" to Make It On Their Own

The path to success hasn’t been without its challenges. Michele and Omar faced a huge hurdle early on when they started out at a creator’s space, limited by time and resources. Things got even more complicated when COVID hit, forcing them to shut down their operations. But, after many sleepless nights of discussions, they made the decision to strike out on their own.

“It was terrifying,” Michele admits. “But we knew if we were going to succeed, it would be because of us. No more hand-holding. No more restrictions.” From that moment on, they adopted a rule that has guided them: take the terrifying step, that's where life is. This mindset pushed them beyond their comfort zones, and it's been the driving force behind their continued growth.

The Time Investment: Crafting With Care

When it comes to creating their pieces, Michele and Omar put a lot of time and effort into each one. Small items take about 2-3 hours of design and programming, while larger pieces like Percy the Peacock or Rocket the Rooster can take months to complete. They’re meticulous in their process, carefully choosing the right wood or stain to achieve the perfect effect. But no matter the size or complexity, every piece is a labor of love.

Where to Find A & I Design’s Work

Michele and Omar are road vendors, traveling to events around Texas and Louisiana, so you can often find them at local festivals and markets. Want to see their work in person? Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates on upcoming events. You can also check out their pieces at the Edom Art House, where they display their creations in both the main gallery and the gift shop. It’s a quirky, welcoming spot that perfectly matches their unique style.

Joining the Edom Art House Family

How did Michele and Omar end up at the Edom Art House? It was thanks to a friendly encounter at the Lindale Wine Festival with a unique sunglass artisan who was drawn to their Highland cow design. He invited them to be part of the Edom Art House, and two years later, they’re still part of the community. “We like the challenges that are put on us, asking us to do a little extra with each piece we craft,” Michele says. For them, being part of Edom is not just about selling art—it’s about growing as artists and business owners, constantly learning from their experiences and their fellow creators.

The Journey Ahead: More Terrifying Steps to Take

For Michele and Omar, the journey is far from over. They’re excited to keep pushing their limits, creating new designs, and stepping into unknown territory—because, as they’ve learned, that’s where the magic happens.

So, whether you're looking for a unique piece of art that speaks to you, or you're simply inspired by a couple who's taken the leap into the creative unknown, A & I Design is a name to remember. Their art is as much about the process as it is the final product, and you can’t help but feel their passion and love for what they do in every piece.
