Meet Carl Nelson: A Late-Blooming Artist Who Paints From the Heart
It’s never too late to follow your passion—and Carl Nelson is living proof of that. At 51 years old, this award-winning artist has only recently embraced his full-time visual art career, but the journey to get here has been one of self-discovery, personal growth, and a deep connection to nature. Carl’s path as an artist started long before he picked up a paintbrush in earnest. From exploring dance, acting, and music to diving into writing and design, Carl has always been a creative soul. But it was when he picked up a brush after a difficult period in his life that he found his true calling.
A Lifeline Through Art
Carl’s art isn’t just about creating beautiful landscapes or portraits—it’s about embracing the human experience. For him, painting was a way to heal. “Painting helped lift me out of a very dark space I was in for almost two years,” Carl explains. “I picked up a brush one day after years of not painting, and it was like a rope, a lifeline I climbed until I had my head up out of the darkness.” That moment of clarity and peace set Carl on a path of artistic discovery that he’s been walking ever since.
Emotions and Nature: The Heart of His Work
What inspires Carl’s art? It’s a blend of emotion and nature. His work often reflects the emotional forces that shape our lives—grief, love, loss, and awakening. His landscapes capture the dramatic forces of nature, with scenes that evoke memories of his childhood on a farm. “My landscapes are inspired mostly by dramatic forces of nature and the rural charm of a back country road,” Carl says. The beauty of the natural world continues to play a key role in his work, as does his own emotional journey. His paintings are about connection—whether it’s connecting with nature, the viewer, or a deeper emotional resonance.
Pushing Boundaries, Exploring New Horizons
Carl’s approach to art is about pushing limits. “Seemingly simple, yet everything I paint is a painting that pushed my limits and abilities,” he says. “I’m still learning as I go.” Whether it’s experimenting with new techniques, exploring new subjects, or painting more challenging compositions, Carl thrives on stepping outside his comfort zone. His influences include iconic American artist Andrew Wyeth, and Carl strives to bring the same precision and beauty to his own work, whether he’s capturing a quiet country road or a symbolic portrait.
Despite the challenges of self-criticism, Carl has learned to embrace his art for what it is—something that exists beyond him. “The art doesn’t belong to me once it’s complete,” he says. “It’s its own entity, with its own spirit and life.” This mindset has helped Carl overcome his own insecurities, allowing him to create freely without judgment, and it’s a lesson that many artists—new and seasoned—can relate to.
From Inspiration to Recognition
Carl’s journey has been one of both personal growth and external recognition. In 2023, his piece She Will Outlive Us All won both Best in Show and the People’s Choice Award at Main Street Gallery’s Spring Group Show. He also took home first place for his landscape Homestead at the 2023 Rose Festival Art Show. But for Carl, the true reward comes when someone connects with his work on an emotional level—when his art resonates deeply with a viewer, and they feel something profound in its presence.

Why Edom Art House?
For Carl, Edom Art House isn’t just another gallery. It’s a place that truly supports artists—not only by showcasing their work but by fostering a community of creative individuals who respect each other and the craft. Carl joined the Edom Art House because he believes in its mission and in Justin’s vision. “I’m inspired to promote the Edom Art House with the same vigor and passion,” Carl says. That mutual respect and love for art is what makes Edom such a special place for artists and visitors alike.
